Blackray
Ultra-Concentrated Liquid Mycorrhizae
with Active “Helpers”

Overview

BlackRay is a next-generation liquid mycorrhizal inoculant based on Rhizophagus irregularis (formerly Glomus intraradices), formulated at one of the highest concentrations available in a ready-to-use product. Produced in vitro under controlled laboratory conditions and bottled without dilution into granules or inert carriers, BlackRay delivers an exceptionally high number of viable propagules directly to the crop’s root zone.

Unlike conventional products that are dried or mixed with clays and powders, BlackRay remains fully hydrated. All forms of the fungus—spores, vesicles, fragments of colonized root, and hyphae—are present and active. Together with its unique “Helpers” (mycorrhization-promoting molecules), this liquid format allows BlackRay to colonize roots faster and more completely than standard mycorrhizal products.

Composition & Concentration

  • Mycorrhizal species: Rhizophagus irregularis (previously Glomus intraradices)
  • Type: Liquid endomycorrhizal inoculant with mycorrhization Helpers
  • Concentration: approx. 5 × 107 propagules per liter (~50,000 propagules per mL)

In practical terms, that’s on the order of tens of thousands of propagules per mL, versus the tens or low hundreds of propagules per mL that are typical of many liquid products. This extreme concentration is what allows BlackRay to perform at very low application volumes while still delivering exceptional root colonization.

What Makes BlackRay Different

  • In-vitro origin: Produced under sterile lab conditions; what you receive is essentially the same concentrated inoculum used by other manufacturers to create their finished products.
  • Ultra-high propagule density: Approximately 50,000 propagules per mL, giving far more active units per acre than typical liquids at their standard rates.
  • Includes hyphae, not just spores: Many products focus purely on spore count. BlackRay contains abundant pre-formed hyphae and colonized root fragments, which act as a “jump start” for colonization and spread.
  • Liquid mycorrhization Helpers: Organic molecules produced during the root–fungus recognition phase are preserved in the liquid. These helper compounds are normally lost when products are dried or mixed into granules.
  • No clays or granular carriers: 100% liquid, fully water-soluble, nothing to clog emitters or settle out in tanks.
  • Irrigation-ready: Designed to move through drip and micro-irrigation systems, coco and soilless media, and standard injection equipment.

How BlackRay Works

Endomycorrhizal Function

Once established, Rhizophagus irregularis forms a symbiotic association with roots, extending a network of hyphae into the surrounding soil or substrate. This network:

  • Greatly increases the absorbing surface of the root system.
  • Improves uptake of phosphorus and other low-mobility nutrients (Zn, Cu, Mn, etc.).
  • Enhances water use efficiency and tolerance to drought or irregular irrigation.
  • Improves plant tolerance to salinity, low pH, and other abiotic stresses.
  • Promotes soil aggregation and stable structure through fungal glomalin and other exudates.

“Helpers” – Mycorrhization Promoters

BlackRay’s liquid matrix also contains organic “Helper” molecules—compounds produced by roots right at the moment they first recognize the mycorrhizal fungus. In solid or dried products these molecules are largely absent; in BlackRay they remain present and active.

These Helpers:

  • Accelerate the recognition and colonization process between fungus and root.
  • Stimulate early root branching and infection point formation.
  • Support more uniform colonization across the treated root system.
  • Contribute to quicker visual responses in plant vigor and growth.

Benefits for Crops

  • Rapid colonization & establishment: Fast root infection means faster access to phosphorus, water, and micronutrients.
  • Higher nutrient absorption: Solubilizes and accesses nutrients that are strongly locked in the soil or substrate.
  • Improved tolerance to adverse conditions: Better performance under low pH, salinity, drought, temperature extremes, and other stresses.
  • Improved soil quality & plant health: Enhances soil microbial balance, aggregate stability, and overall root-zone biology.
  • Greater yield and crop quality: More balanced plants, improved growth, and the capacity to maintain productivity through stress events.

Relative Strength vs. Typical Liquid Products

Based on propagule counts listed on commonly available labels, many liquid mycorrhizal inoculants contain roughly 50–100 propagules per mL. BlackRay, at about 50,000 propagules per mL, is therefore hundreds of times more concentrated, even before considering the presence of hyphae and helpers.

Product Type Approx. Propagules per mL Relative Concentration
Typical liquid mycorrhizae 50–100 1× (baseline)
BlackRay ~50,000 ≈500–1,000× more propagules per mL

In practice, this means that very small volumes of BlackRay can deliver as many or more active propagules per acre as full-rate applications of typical liquid products. For field simplicity and uniform distribution, the label still recommends practical, easy-to-measure rates.

Application Recommendations

Fertigation (Recommended)

  • Rate: 15 fl oz/acre
  • Timing: Transplant stage, winter dormancy release, or immediately after harvest in orchards or perennial crops.
  • Inject into the irrigation system so the product reaches the active root zone.

Soil Drench / Direct to Root Zone

  • Rate: 15 fl oz/acre
  • Method: Dilute BlackRay in enough water to thoroughly wet the root system or planting band. Can be applied via drip, micro-sprinkler, or directed band spray.

For high-value crops, transplants, or heavily stressed fields, BlackRay may be used in more than one application window (e.g., at transplant and again at early flowering or root-flush), always within label guidance.

Use with Other Products

  • Excellent with Rhyzo and root biostimulants: BlackRay + Rhyzo is an exceptionally strong program for root mass and early establishment.
  • Compatible with most fertilizers and biostimulants; avoid extreme pH mixes and always perform a jar test with new tank combinations.
  • Apply when soil moisture is adequate; avoid waterlogged or completely dry conditions at the time of application.

Handling & Storage

  • Store in a cool place away from direct sunlight; avoid temperatures above 30 °C (86 °F).
  • Do not freeze; freezing can damage propagules and reduce efficacy.
  • Shake gently before use to redisperse fungal material.
  • Use clean equipment and avoid contaminating the remaining product in the container.
  • Keep out of reach of children; follow all label safety instructions.

Why Growers Choose BlackRay

  • Highest-density liquid mycorrhizae available, with in-vitro–grade propagules.
  • Faster colonization thanks to living hyphae and preserved helper molecules.
  • Irrigation-ready – easy to inject, easy to distribute, no carriers or clays.
  • Outstanding performance at low doses, yet simple, practical label rates.
  • Delivers root system growth that, when paired with strong root biostimulants like Rhyzo, can be visibly superior to conventional programs.
